"British Columbia and five other provinces are teaming up to sue Canadian tobacco firms for health-care costs. While one arm of the BC's Liberal government is paying favourite law firms to plan legal action against the tobacco industry, in fiscal 2012, bcIMC, another arm of government, increased investment holdings in the merchants of death.
"B.C., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island are retaining a national legal team to help them prosecute Canadian tobacco companies.
"...Every Canadian province and Nunavut have adopted legislation that seeks recovery of medicare costs against the tobacco industry, estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars."
Similarly, while ethical investment fund operators like Vancity are dumping bad pipeline businesses like the proposed Northern Gateway constructor, British Columbia's investment agency increased its stake in ENBRIDGE by close to $300 million dollars in the last fiscal year.

No doubt, smoking is not a good habit. Neither is, poisoned air, land, lakes, rivers, streams and sea pollution, by burning fossil fuels and dirty Bitumen spilled across terrains and into the sea.
ReplyDeleteHow do we recover the money, for these medical costs? For free home heat. One just has to light the water on fire, coming out of your faucets, from fracking for gas. F.N. children made so sick by pipe bursts, they had to abandon their schools. The stench so terrible in the high north, some have to wear respirators to breathe. Air so poisoned in Prince George, everyone was getting sick.
That is only a drop in the bucket, for how sick you can get from, all the poisons forced on us by pollution of everything, we eat, drink, and smell.
I assume the lawsuit against the tobacco industry is a sham, another one of those wealth transfers from taxpayers to the already wealthy.
ReplyDeleteIs the Liberal government serious about putting a stop to harm done by tobacco companies when they have invested more than half a billion dollars to support that industry.
Similarly, why is the province investing well more than half a billion in Enbridge when so many citizens of this province oppose that company's plans for our province.
As you have pointed out, shouldn’t the court refuse to hear the case - send them packing for aiding and abetting the harm they purport to be seeking compensation for?
ReplyDeleteWhat a further colossal waste of money. Our legal system is a cabal.
They are paying massive amounts of money to have holes bashed through the hull of our ship of state – then charge us for the vessel.

Most people aren't aware of any link between Big Tobacco and Big Oil. Well, there is one and, dare I say, it's a Big Link: Many of the exact same "scientists" who got very rich 'whoring' for Big Tobacco (denying the hazards of smoking, second-hand smoke, etc.) are the exact same "scientists" who now deny climate change on behalf of their new pimps, at Big Oil...so-called Lord Christopher Monckton being one of the better-known whores.
