Factory food helps business thrive and prosper

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don`t it always seem to go
That you don`t know what you`ve got
Till it`s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put `em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see `em
Don`t it always seem to go
That you don`t know what you`ve got
Till it`s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away the D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don`t it always seem to go
That you don`t know what you`ve got
Till it`s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot . . .

  1. Norm. Another very, very incidental sidebar to the Joni Mitchel song.

As a 'Trawna' boy in the 60's, we around Yorkville were very familiar with the "Big Yellow Taxi', as that was what we called the MTPD cruisers which at the time were all painted yellow.
If you didn't know that already, it does add a curious dimension to the reference in the song.

  2. Joni Mitchell apparently told the LA Times years ago that she wrote the song on a visit to Honolulu after looking out her hotel room one morning at a vast expanse of parking lots.

But, you could be right because, after being raised in the West, she lived in TO before writing the song. Besides, artists sometimes change their stories about what inspired a song to fit their current mood or whomever they talk with.

  3. Thanks for sharing Norm. It is a living nightmare for me to go grocery shopping, especially in the winter months when local fruits and veggies are almost non existant. Monsanto is an evil entity.
